Day 2: Grosvenor Square

With the part of our morning not spent eating, packing, or getting to the train station, we took a walk to Grosvenor Square in Mayfair. All the Regency books set in London (ok, maybe not all of them) have their heroes living in Mayfair, often on Grosvenor Square. If all of those characters actually lived there, there would be many times as many houses as fit around the square. 😆

So we had to visit, while we were in walking distance.

  • It seems like Americans have basically taken over the square. The biggest monument in the park is a statue of FDR. There is an eagle symbolizing the many Americans and a few Brits who flew in the royal airforce before the US joined the war. And there’s a seal at the Diplomatic Gates commemorating the bicentennial of the Treaty of Paris in 1783, when the US officially got its independence. It didn’t feel as English as I expected. 🤔

    1. Before going, Liza described it as a neighborhood where the wealthy lived…in the 18th century. That informed us about the architecture we would see. Judging by the many Bentleys, Rolls Royces and the Aston Martin dealership, I’d say it’s still got it.

    2. Since it was not winter, I don’t know if there was a chill to the place, but perhaps a nip to the air???
